Get your free estimateRheem Thermostat Installation: The Orlando Owner’s Guide
A Rheem thermostat installation in Orlando typically runs $180 – $450 installed, depending on whether you’re swapping in a standard programmable model or upgrading to a Wi-Fi smart thermostat with humidity control features. We stock Rheem-compatible thermostats on our service trucks, and in most cases we can complete the install the same day we diagnose the problem.
Most Orlando homeowners figure out their thermostat has failed when the AC won’t kick on at the set temperature, or when the display goes blank despite fresh batteries. Sometimes it’s not the thermostat at all, it’s a wiring fault or a control board issue. That’s why we never quote a thermostat replacement over the phone without looking at the unit first. Tell you what it costs, tell you what’s broken, then we fix it. In that order.
Andre Fuller has been turning wrenches on Rheem systems for over two decades, and he’ll be the first to tell you that a thermostat failing in Florida hits different than it does in other states. Your AC in Orlando runs hundreds more hours per year than it would almost anywhere else. That constant cycling wears out thermostats faster here, especially the mechanical relay contacts inside older non-digital models.
Which Rheem Models This Applies To
Rheem thermostats fall into two broad camps: the Econet series (Rheem’s proprietary smart thermostat line, models like the EcoNet RETST700SYS and the newer A96 series) and standard 24-volt models that work with nearly any Rheem air handler or furnace. If you have a Rheem communicating system, meaning a higher-end variable-speed unit installed in the last 8 to 10 years, you almost always need an EcoNet thermostat or a compatible aftermarket communicating model. A standard thermostat won’t talk to your system properly, and you’ll lose the variable-speed efficiency you paid for.
Here’s the gotcha we see constantly in Orlando: not every Wi-Fi thermostat works with Rheem’s proprietary wiring. Rheem communicating systems use a four-wire data connection, not the traditional R, C, W, Y, G wire setup. If you grab a Nest or an Ecobee off the shelf and try to wire it into a Rheem communicating air handler, you’ll either get nothing or you’ll get a system that runs at a single fixed speed. We’ve been called to dozens of Dr. Phillips homes where a homeowner or handyman tried exactly that, and the system never cooled right afterward.
For standard Rheem systems, which cover the vast majority of single-stage and two-stage units in the Orlando area, you have real flexibility. The OEM Rheem thermostat is solid, but quality aftermarket equivalents from brands like Honeywell and Emerson cost less and often have better app support. We stock OEM Rheem thermostats for warranty-matched installs and reliable aftermarket units when the goal is a better smart-home experience at a lower price. Halden Heating and Air Orlando is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Rheem, so we’re free to recommend whichever option actually fits your system and budget. We also stock compatible parts for Carrier, Trane, and Lennox systems.

Signs Your Rheem Thermostat Installation Is Failing
- Blank or flickering display despite fresh batteries. This usually points to a failed internal power supply or a broken solder joint on the board. On Rheem Econet models, a flashing screen often means the thermostat lost communication with the air handler.
- System short-cycles or runs constantly without reaching the set temperature. The thermostat’s temperature sensor drifts over time, especially in humid Orlando air. When the sensor reads wrong, the thermostat thinks the house is cooler or warmer than it actually is.
- Temperature on the display doesn’t match a separate thermometer in the same room. A sensor that’s off by more than 3 degrees means the thermostat is no longer doing its one real job: reading the room accurately.
- Buttons or touchscreen work intermittently. This is corrosion or a failing ribbon cable inside the unit. Florida humidity accelerates this. You’ll notice certain buttons need multiple presses or the touchscreen ignores taps until you tap harder.
- The system runs but the fan doesn’t, or vice versa. The relay that sends the fan signal is a common failure point on older Rheem thermostats. When that relay welds or burns out, the compressor might run without the blower, which can freeze your coil solid.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what we charge for Rheem thermostat installation in Orlando, and exactly what you’re paying for:
- Standard non-programmable thermostat: $180 – $240 installed. Basic, reliable, does the job. Good for rental properties or for anyone who just wants a working system.
- Programmable thermostat: $220 – $300 installed. Adds schedule-based temperature control, which actually matters when you’re trying to cut a summer electric bill in Orlando.
- Wi-Fi smart thermostat (non-communicating Rheem system): $280 – $400 installed. Full app control, scheduling, energy reports. Works with standard 24-volt Rheem systems.
- Rheem EcoNet communicating thermostat: $350 – $450 installed. Required for Rheem variable-speed communicating systems. Includes full system diagnostics through the thermostat itself.
Every install includes the new thermostat, all wiring work, system testing across heat and cool modes, and a walkthrough of the settings so you’re not squinting at a manual later. You get a written price before any work starts, and the install is covered under our written guarantee. If something’s not right within the coverage window, we come back at no charge. That’s automatic, not something you have to ask for.
DIY or Call Us?
Replacing a thermostat involves low-voltage wiring, which is not the same as playing with your electrical panel. For standard 24-volt systems, it’s technically possible for a careful homeowner to swap a thermostat in under an hour. But here’s where DIY goes wrong: mismatched wiring can send 24 volts to the wrong terminal and fry the control board on your Rheem air handler. That turns a $250 thermostat job into a $500 – $800 board replacement. We’ve seen it happen more than once in the Orlando area.
If your thermostat has a blank screen, the first thing you can safely check is the batteries and the breaker. If the unit has batteries, swap them. If the breaker tripped, reset it. If those two things don’t fix it, stop there and call us. Communicating systems, meaning anything with an Econet thermostat and a four-wire data connection, should never be touched without a trained technician. You can’t wire those wrong and get lucky. You’ll get a dead system and a diagnostic bill on top of the thermostat.
For anything beyond batteries and breakers, call (850) 695-3178 and we’ll get someone out with the right thermostat and the right wiring diagram for your exact Rheem model.
FAQs
Most Rheem thermostats last 8 to 12 years in the Orlando climate, though we’ve seen some fail in as little as 5 years due to constant cycling and humidity exposure. If your thermostat is over a decade old and acting up, replacement is usually smarter than repair. Call (850) 695-3178 and Andre or one of the crew can tell you within five minutes whether yours is worth saving.
Sometimes, but rarely worth it. The most common repairable failure is a corroded wire connection at the terminal block, which is a $80 – $150 fix. If the internal sensor or relay has failed, the part cost nearly equals a new thermostat. We’ll always tell you the cheaper honest answer. Estimates are free.
Most thermostat installs take 45 to 90 minutes from arrival to a fully tested system. Communicating thermostat installs can take a bit longer because the system needs to be configured and paired with the air handler. We give you a live arrival time when you book, so you know exactly when we’ll be there.
Yes. We carry OEM Rheem Econet thermostats and standard Rheem-compatible models on our service trucks when we come out to the Orlando area, which means most thermostat replacements are done in a single visit. For less common communicating models, we can usually have the part in hand within a day. Call (850) 695-3178 and we’ll tell you over the phone whether yours is a stock item.
